CHAPTER 8
The next morning went pretty much as Al had hoped with no visitors as he and Faith followed what would be considered a normal routine. They cleaned up some of the mess from yesterdayâs two encounters and Al was able to take his bath in the washtub. Faith had promised to stay in the barracks and continue the cleaning there until he was dressed so they would avoid any inspirational issues.
_____
It wasnât until almost noon before Luke began to get concerned by Harry and Benâs absence. He had Matt round up Joe Evermore and they met at the Horseshoe Saloon.
âDo you want me to go up there and check on them?â Joe asked.
âWait until tomorrow. I canât see them staying there another day.â
âAre you and Matt cominâ?â Joe asked.
âWe need to stay here and mind the fort, but if you have to go, I want you to be careful. Donât just go riding in and expect to find them there.â
âWhy not? What could have happened to âem?â
âMaybe Evans didnât die from that belly wound and managed to kill them both. Iâm going to go and talk to Charlie while I can and ask him how sure he was that he hit him in the gut.â
âHarry said that he saw him go down and there was a hole in his left side and a lot of blood. He woulda bled out after an hour or so.â
âI know what Harry said, but I want to get it from Charlie. The doc made it sound like Charlie might not make it.â
âI thought heâd be out for a month or two.â
âThatâs what the doc said at first, but when he got to work, he found out that the bullet really screwed up his arm. If he loses the arm, then heâll be useless anyway.â
âSo, you just need me to go out there and do some lookinâ around tomorrow?â
âThatâs all. If you see anyone walking around, just watch for a while and then come back here.â
âAlright.â
Luke then stood and waited for his brother before leaving the saloon and heading to Doctor Maxwellâs office to talk to Charlie.
When they arrived, the doctorâs nurse told them that Charlie was sedated with laudanum and wasnât able to talk for a while, so they returned to their house to start looking at options. They hoped that Harry and Ben would return later today, but Luke was beginning to believe that the never would. When Joe returned tomorrow with his information, then theyâd be able to firm up their plans.
_____
Faith was sitting at the table with Al as they shared lunch when she asked, âHow long before someone in your family became worried that you hadnât contacted them?â
âAt least a couple of weeks, if not a month. They knew that I was coming here to start building the ranch and when I left with the horses and mules driving a loaded buckboard, they wouldnât expect to hear from me for a while.â
âSo, as far as they know, youâre on your new place happily working to make it a working horse ranch.
